Extra look at Civil War reenactment

Not all town jewels are people. One is a house. For two years, driving west on East South Street toward the underpass, I couldn't help noticing the stunning transformation of a little brick bungalow just before the four-way stop at Chambers Street. Next door, an ancient, empty remnant of a family store looks ready to crumble.

This past week I talked with our insurance agent about our net worth, what type of insurance we want to carry on our house, our cars, ourselves, and our future selves ... meaning disability insurance and long-term care insurance.

The Carl Sandburg College Choir and the Chamber Choir will present a concert in the Crist Student Center on the main campus of CSC at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 17.  The concert is free and open to the public.

About 10 minutes before the game on Sunday, Cardinals coach Tom Harrison and Knoxville Raiders coach Dave Kummer had their game plans.

“It’s nice to see we can give them a career or a stepping stone to a better life,” said U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Troy Bleyaert, a recruiter in Galesburg at 503 Knox Square Drive. “It’s nice to see them come back (from basic training) and see the transformation from civilian to soldier. They stand a little taller, they walk a little prouder and are more respectful.”

Hard to believe that fall is here already. Much of summer felt like fall; the beginning of fall feels like summer. Illinois weather — go figure! With the relatively cool year, later than normal planting and more than ample rainfall, our harvest is at least two to three weeks behind normal in the area.

I have had a tendency to go to the opposite extreme on some of the family practices and traditions of my mom and dad. You see, birthdays were not that big of a deal.

Running cross country at a junior college is, clearly, what you make it. You won't find the big crowds in the bleachers or a school band playing at halftime.
